Life Vest Q & A

What is LifeVest?

LifeVest is a wearable cardioverter defibrillator from ZOLL® Medical Corp. in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. You wear it if you’re at high risk of having a sudden cardiac event that could lead to death.

The technology controls dangerously fast heart rhythms by delivering an electrical shock to your heart. LifeVest doesn’t require surgery to implant a device but delivers the shock through your skin.

Am I a candidate for LifeVest?

The providers at Bay Area Cardiology Associates PA can determine if you’re a candidate for LifeVest during a physical exam and evaluation of your heart health.

They could recommend LifeVest if you have problems that affect your heart’s electrical system, which controls your heartbeat. When this system isn’t working correctly, your heartbeat can become too fast and cause your heart to quiver.

Conditions that can qualify you for LifeVest include:

  • Prior heart attack
  • Heart failure
  • Diabetes
  • Smoking history
  • Weight challenges
  • Hypertension (high blood pressure)
  • Viral infection in the heart
  • Family history of sudden cardiac death

These issues can affect the heart’s ability to pump blood to the rest of your body and cause sudden cardiac arrest without warning. If you don’t get emergency treatment, a cardiac arrest can cause death within minutes. This is called sudden cardiac death (SCD).

How does LifeVest protect against sudden cardiac death?

Because you can develop an irregular heart rhythm at any time and without warning, you need to have access to a defibrillator at all times. A defibrillator can normalize your heart rhythm to prevent complications and death.

By wearing the LifeVest, you have constant protection from life-threatening heart rhythm abnormalities. No matter where you are or what you’re doing, the LifeVest wearable defibrillator can deliver the lifesaving shock you need to stay safe.

The LifeVest works even while you’re sleeping. The wearable defibrillator also protects you when there’s no one else around to get you to the hospital. This is especially important because 50% of sudden cardiac death cases happen when the person is alone.

To learn more about the treatment benefits of the LifeVest wearable defibrillator, call the office of Bay Area Cardiology Associates PA nearest to you today or book an appointment online.
